What does the on call duty imply when working in the expanded role?

When you are on call, you need to always be ready to answer the phone. You usually have a radiotelephone available to you and you can also transfer the calls to your residence. You can do your usual activities while knowing that the phone can ring at any time. Sometimes, people call for some Info-Santé type of advice. In the small communities, calls are rare (sometimes only one during the week). In the bigger communities, ex. Mistissini, the on call duties are very busy. The on call job implies that you must always be alert: you can’t take alcohol and you must expect to maybe get woken up during the night for an emergency.
