Working in a Northern hospital is different than working in a big hospital. There are a lot less specialists and less equipment, but the essentials can be found there. The hospital is the center for all the clinics attached to it. All patients in need of secondary health care will be transferred so they can be seen by a doctor and obtain tests and additional health care. Patients who come from the other communities are stabilized and, if needed, evacuated towards the service centers in urban regions.
On the department, also called medicine or care unit, many diversified cases can be found:
- Active medicine
- Minor surgery
- Long-term health care
- Respite/emergency accomodations
In addition to the department, you have access to other units:
- Emergency room/outpatient clinic
- Hemodialysis (Chisasibi and Mistissini)
- Delivery room (Nunavik)
Some specialists do sporadic visits. Patients from the communities then come to the hospital for their appointment with the specialist.
